The basketball team of Western Institute Technology-ILOPRISAA maintained its formidable appearance in the hard court as they claimed the title in the Mayor Eugene Reyes Invitational Cup at the Buenavista Covered Gym, Jan. 14.
It was a rematch of the just-concluded ILOPRISAA but the orange shirts regained the old form that won the last month’s league by dominating Central Philippine University (CPU), 73-60.
The Golden Lions conceded the championship match with over seven minutes left remaining, giving WIT the coveted victory.
Meanwhile, Asialink/E&C Trucking salvaged a bronzed medal finish after a 118-110 victory over sister team P.Doce SBC- Iloilo Doctors College in a thrilling battle-for-third game.
Ralph Bajon, Ryan Calamaan, Ronrei Tolentino and John Bryan Sajonia took paced Asialink with high-percentage shots, following a heartbreaking defeat in the semifinals.
For coach Rodel Camacho, they are happy with the win, despite being undermanned. “We have NBTC in Iloilo, the reason why we fielded fewer players here. But we’re happy to finish third,” he added.
The basketball cup, led by Buenavista Sports Coordinator Alex Fernandez, was in line with Buenavista’s Palayag Festival. It aimed at inspiring the young Ilonggo basketball players to hone their skills further, inspire locals and community. With the success of this tournament, the group is planning to have another invitational league this summer.IMT
