President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has placed the whole Western Visayas under a state of calamity due the devastation caused by Severe Tropical Storm “Paeng.”
“I Ferdinand Marcos Jr., President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by the Constitution and existing laws, I hereby declare a State of Calamity in Regions IV-A (CALABARZON), VI (WV), and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM),” Proclamation No. 84 stated.
“The State of Calamity shall remain in force and effect for a period of six months unless earlier lifted by the president,” it further stated.
Signed by Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin, the proclamation was issued on Wednesday, Nov. 2.
The declaration aims to “hasten the rescue, recovery, relief and rehabilitation efforts of the government and the private sector.”
It will also “effectively control the prices of basic necessities and prime commodities, and afford the national government, as well as local government units (LGUs), ample latitude to utilize appropriate funds for rescue, recovery, relief and rehabilitation efforts.”
Based on the Nov. 1 report by the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC-6), the typhoon affected 348,780 families or 1,321,601 persons in WV.
It also claimed 29 lives and injured 1 in the region. Of the fatalities, 11 were from Antique, 7 from Aklan, 6 from Capiz, and 5 from Iloilo.IMT
