If other athletes want to be part of teams based in Manila to chase their dream, two Ilonggo cagers decided to return and play for their hometown.
Showing their skills to University of Santo Tomas (UST), Kevin Barranco and Raven Beliran chose to return to Iloilo and play for the Central Philippine University (CPU) Golden Lions men’s basketball team.
Barranco, the pride of Janiuay, Iloilo said pandemic was the main reason, and it’s not a personal decision because he talked to some important people and ask some advice.
The 6-foot-3 Barranco also starred the St. Robert’s International Academy (SRIA) Panda Rockets before being recruited by Aldin Ayo to join UST’s high school team.
“CPU is one of the best universities here in Iloilo and I’m happy and never regretted my decision. My dad and sister graduated at CPU that’s why I choose CPU,” he added.
Meanwhile, Beliran of San Jose, Antique, was a former Ayo recruit for the UST Tiger Cubs. He was scouted after his impressive stint with the Hua Siong College of Iloilo Red Phoenix.
“Thank you for Coach Mat na tinanggap niya ako sa team. I’m looking forward to join and play with the team after the pandemic,” he added.
Despite the return, both players said they have no regrets about chasing their dreams in Manila, especially that they learned a lot for the UST squad.
“Marami akong natutunan doon na I know madadala ko sa mga susunod na games. Dito sa CPU, I want to be a better version of me and I want to share my talents with them especially with my coaches and teammates. I’m hoping for my success and my colleagues not only on basketball but also in our studies,” shared Barranco.IMT
