Iloilo Fifth District Representative Raul “Boboy” Tupas has backed the proposed postponement of the December 2022 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.
The postponement, according to the lawmaker, would allow continuity in the delivery of basic services and implementation of programs and projects at the barangay level.
According to Tupas, barangay officials deserve to be given a chance to implement or finish some of their programs and projects that suffered delays due to challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Naubos ila termino sa pag-atubang sa pandemic. Wala na implement iban na programs,” he said.
Aside from the pandemic, the country is also struggling with other problems like the soaring prices of petroleum products and basic goods, Tupas pointed out.
He said the P8.44 billion fund allocated by the national government for the village and youth polls can be used for the meantime to fund various initiatives to help the country recover from the pandemic.
Tupas is hopeful that President Ferdinand “BongBong” Marcos Jr. will certify as urgent the proposed measures in Congress seeking to postpone the barangay and SK elections for a year.IMT
