With the start of the legislative inquiry into the defective Ungka Flover, Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas expects that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will fast-track the process for the repair of the structure.

In a media interview, Treñas said the four-lane flyover, which has been closed to traffic for almost a year, needs to be functional again to ease the burden of commuters and motorists.

Built by private contractor International Builders Corporation (IBC), the P680-million elevated roadway was fully opened to the public on September 5 last year but was closed to traffic 13 days later after it was found to be sinking.

According to Abinales Associates Engineers + Consultant, the third-party consultancy firm hired by DPWH to conduct a geotechnical investigation on flyover, at least P250 million will be needed for the repair.

The House of Representatives’ Committee on Public Works and Highways started its inquiry into the sinking flyover on August 15.

The first inquiry was attended by Iloilo City Rep. Jamjam Baronda, Iloilo Third District Rep. Lorenz Defensor, Fourth District Rep. Ferj Biron, and Uswag Ilonggo Party-list Rep. James “Jojo” Ang.IMT
