Mayor Jerry Treñas called on school principals in Iloilo City to cancel in-person classes “in case the temperature is too high.”

“The authority to call off classes is with you,” Treñas said in a statement on Monday, April 24.

According to Department of Education (DepEd), schools may switch to alternative delivery modes (ADM).

In its Memorandum No. 2023-077 dated April 20, the DepEd specifically cited the “extremely high temperatures” as among the valid grounds for class suspension or cancellation.

The school break in public schools was moved to different months over the last three years, as school opening dates were adjusted amid the COVID-19.

In an interview with President Bongbong Marcos, he said the government is studying proposals to return the start of school “summer break” to March.

IMT
