Mayor Jerry Treñas has lifted the mandatory use of face masks in indoor settings in Iloilo City following the move of the World Health Organization (WHO) to end the global emergency status for COVID-19.

The voluntary use of face masks in both open and closed spaces was ordered by Treñas on Tuesday, May 9, through an executive order (EO).

However, according to EO No. 55, the wearing of masks is still required in healthcare facilities, medical transport vehicles, and public transportation by land, sea, and air.

It is also “highly encouraged” for elderly, pregnant women, and individuals who are symptomatic, unvaccinated, with comorbidity, and immuno-compromised.

“This [EO] may be amended from time to time, in recognition of the fast-developing status of the COVID-19 situation, as the need arises, or if there is a change in the situation as reported by the City Health Office (CHO), Department of Health (DOH) or [WHO],” the EO stated.

Last week, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that COVID-19 no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).IMT
