“I am afraid it might already be a new variant [of the coronavirus].”

This was stressed by Mayor Jerry P. Treñas when he asked the national Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) and the medical community “to come down and investigate the cases in the city.”

The mayor cited the “very fast transmission and the virulence of the virus” in the metropolis.

In the past four week, the city has recorded not less than 100 new cases of COVID-19 a day.

Based on the June 18 bulletin issued by the Department of Health (DOH-6), the number of active cases in the city stands at 2,400.

Its total cumulative cases is at 9,885, including 249 death and 7,233 recoveries.

According to the mayor, Iloilo City ranked third among the local government units (LGUs) outside the National Capital Region (NCR) with the highest single-day rise in COVID-19 cases from June 11 to 17.

“It is very alarming to see the name of the city under one of the LGUs with most new cases. With 132 cases (average) with unidentified causes of transmission, the Ilonggos become more vulnerable to the virus,” said Treñas.

“To protect them, we have been utilizing all vaccines available and hire more medical personnel to take care of our patients. We are also awaiting additional support so more Ilonggos will be protected,” he added.

Davao City topped the list with 232 average new COVID-19 cases daily and followed by Bacolod City with 163.

Treñas also called on the Iloilo medical community to review everything and give suggestions and recommendations on the matter.

“The cases continue to grow very very fast,” he lamented.IMT
