Mayor Jerry Treñas has expressed openness to the idea of imposing a total ban on the sale of all alcoholic drinks in Iloilo City.
“There are suggestions to the COVID-19 Team that there should be a total ban on the sale of all alcoholic drinks up to May 31,” Treñas said in Tuesday, May 25.
The city government’s COVID Team, according to the mayor, “is currently seriously studying the suggestion.”
In a report by radio station RMN-Iloilo, COVID-19 Team spokesperson Jeck Conlu said there’s a standing order from the mayor to prohibit the selling and drinking of alcoholic beverages in public places starting 6 p.m.
The city’s quarantine classification was escalated from the least restrictive modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) to modified enhance community quarantine (MECQ) on Sunday, May 23.
This is to address the “alarming” increase in the number of fresh coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the metropolis.
Based on the May 25 bulletin issued by the Department of Health (DOH-6) the city has a total of 7,224 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic in March last year.
Of the figure, 5,951 have recovered, 197 have died, and 1,073 are considered active cases.IMT
