A veteran sportswriter based in Bacolod City passed away around 7:10 am of Sept. 15, 2021.
Jerome Galunan Jr., sports blogger, writer and teacher, was a big loss to Negros sports as he was the primary source of sports stories not just in Negros Occidental but also in the region.
Galunan was a former sports writer for the Watchmen Daily Journal. He also worked as editor for Sportsjourn.com and taught at Sum-ag National High School. He was survived by his wife and a daughter.
According to some reports, Galunan’s RT-PCR test revealed he was positive for COVID-19.
Ilonggo sportsman Edwin Caro Laru-an, posted on his Facebook account thanking Galunan for his contribution in sports.
“Thank you for your contribution by sharing your talent in sports writing. I never thought this will be our last conversation. We will miss you my good friend,” he captioned.
Meanwhile, few hours after, Radyo Bandera Sweet FM-Bacolod anchorman Rushmore Ubas also died in a hospital.
Ubas was formerly an assistant station manager and anchorman of Bombo Radyo-Bacolod. He joined Radyo Bandera Sweet FM-Bacolod as anchorman for the 11-MBPS program in 2017.
He also assisted many people in his radio program, especially Negrense and Bacolodnon overseas Filipino workers. Ubas left behind a son and two daughters.
The media community in the province of Negros Occidental mourned the sudden passing of two veteran journalists.
The Negros Press Club (NPC) headed by Yves Buenafe Montecillo mourned the loss of two of its members.
For Montecillo, she said Galunan as hardworking and dedicated to his profession both in the academe and the media. She also described Ubas as a straightforward reporter with his insightful and dynamic commentaries.
Guimaras sportsman and West Visayas State University sports director Dr. Richard Gabayoyo was also shocked about Galunan’s passing.
“Although sports activities are already affected, the passing of Jerome will really affect the sports publicity and promotion in Negros. Jerome has truly mastered his skills in sportswriting. He has put his time and passion in sports knowing his relation and connection to the different sports leaders and officials in Negros,” he added.IMT Sports
