The Sangguniang Panlungsod on Tuesday, Sept. 17, unanimously approved a resolution endorsing the proposal of West Visayas State University (WVSU) in La Paz district, Iloilo City to open a law school.
“Many of its alumni, especially those [political science graduates], dream to become lawyers and almost 40 percent of the students enrolled in the law schools of Iloilo City are graduates of WVSU,” the resolution authored by Councilor Rudolph Ganzon read.
“For the record, two of WVSU’s political science graduates [ranked first and fourth in the Bar exams in 2014 and 2016, respectively],” the resolution further stated.
Currently, there are two private universities in the city that offer law programs. These are the University of San Agustin and Central Philippine University.
WVSU’s application for the opening of a law school is still being reviewed by the Legal Education Board.
Once it gets a go-signal, WVSU will be the first state university in whole Western Visayas region to have a law school.
The proposed WVSU College of Law aims to “provide financially-challenged but academically able students oppurtunities to equip themselves for active and effective participation as professionals in legal counseling, advocacy, research, and decision making.”
The SP will forward copies of the resolution to the Legal Education Board, Commission on Higher Education (CHED-6), and WVSU.
WVSU is one of the premier state institutions of higher education in WV. It has satellite campuses in the municipalities of Calinog, Janiuay, Pototan, and Lambunao in Iloilo province, and Himamaylan City in Negros Occidental.IMT
