Councilor Johnny Young wants to limit the hours that street traders or ambulant vendors can operate in Iloilo City.
Under his proposed ordinance, all ambulant vendors are allowed to sell only from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m of the following day.
The measure also prohibits them from leaving their stalls and garbage on the streets after their operating hours.
Penalties ranging from P1,000 to P3000 and confiscation of license plates await those who fail to comply.
Young said ambulant vending provides people an opportunity to earn a living and helps facliitate the distribution of goods and services in the city.
But the vendors, according to the councilor, obstruct streets and sidewalks, causing inconvenience to both pedestrians and vehicles.
“Ginabilin nila ang ila nga kariton. Daw kalaw-ay tan-awon sa aton mga turista kag mga bisita kag ang salakyan nga magpark sa dalanon indi ka park kay ara dira ang ambulant vendors,” Young told reporters.
At present, there are around 200 ambulant vendors operating in the city.
Young’s proposed ordinance hurdled the first reading and was referred to the Committee on Trade, Commerce & Industry chaired by Councilor Rudolph Ganzon.
The committee hearing for the measure is set on April 24.IMT
