A new study found that rising seas could wipe out Iloilo City by 2050.
Iloilo City is one of the areas in the Philippines that are at risk of sea-level rise and coastal flooding due to Climate Change, according to the study released by Climate Central, a science organization based in New Jersey, USA.
The study was published in the journal Nature Communications last Oct. 29, 2019.
Roxas City in Capiz, Cebu City, Zamboanga City, and Metro Manila cities, among others, are also threatened to be underwater by 2050.
Other Asian countries that are at risk include Thailand, Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, China, Japan, and Vietnam.
Based on the study, the new estimate of land and people at risk is “far greater” than previous estimations. The authors of the study learned of this after developing a more accurate way of calculating land elevation based on satellite readings.
“[Global] impacts of sea-level rise and coastal flooding this century will likely be far greater than indicated by the most pessimistic past analyses relying on Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM),” the study stated.
“Analysis reveals a developed global coastline three times more exposed to extreme coastal water levels than previously thought.”IMT
