The Police Regional Office (PRO-6) warned the public anew about the existing Commission on Elections (COMELEC) gun ban implemented in line with the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).
PRO-6 spokesperson Maj. Grace Borio said from the start of implementation on Aug. 28 until Sept. 4, police units in Western Visayas have already arrested 10 individuals and confiscated seven assorted firearms and three bladed weapons.
“When we say COMELEC gun ban, it doesn’t mean that only firearms are prohibited outside of our residence. It covers bladed and deadly weapons and even gun replicas,” she said in an interview on Tuesday, Sept. 5.
She said two were caught through checkpoints, while the rest were through various police operations.
Borio said one COMELEC checkpoint is set up per municipality daily and at least two per police station.
“We advise the public not to bring bladed weapons or firearms outside of residence so they won’t get caught in COMELEC checkpoints. There is no bail for violation of the COMELEC gun, unlike in ordinary days,” she added.
Cases were filed against three suspects, while the rest are for filing.Perla Lena/PNA
