Pneumonia is the leading cause of death in the province of Iloilo, data from the Provincial Health Office (PHO) showed.

PHO recorded a total of 1,120 deaths due to pneumonia, an infectious respiratory disease that affects the lungs, in 2022.

Pneumonia is swelling or inflammation in one or both lungs caused by exposure to certain bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Common signs of the disease can include cough, fever and difficulty in breathing.

Myocardial infarction or heart attack was the second-leading cause of death in the province. It’s responsible for 691 deaths.

Other leading causes of death in Iloilo were cancer all forms (474), accident all forms (300), diebetes mellitus (264), kidney disease (257), coronary artery disease (253), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (221), sepsis/septicemia (220), and congestive heart failure (200).
