The sanitary landfill in Aglalana village in Iloilo’s component city of Passi is 65 to 70 percent complete, the city mayor said.
Mayor Stephen Palmares said he was informed of the construction progress during a Thursday’s (Feb. 13) meeting with the private partner.
“It nears completion. We are undertaking now the signing of the memorandum of agreement with other local government units (that will also utilize the facility),” Palmares said.
The target date to open the first cells of the landfill is on March 15, he said.
This means that 27 towns in Iloilo province–Badiangan, Bingawan, Cabatuan, Calinog, Janiuay, Lambunao, Maasin, Mina, and Pototan from the third district of Iloilo; Anilao, Banate, Barotac Nuevo, Dingle, Dueñas, Dumangas, and San Enrique from the fourth district; and Ajuy, Balasan, Barotac Viejo, Batad, Carles, Concepcion, Estancia, Lemery, San Dioso, San Rafael; and Sara in the fifth district can already utilize the landfill for the disposal of their residual wastes.
Palmares said the private partner is also briefing the 27 towns of the technical aspects in its utilization.
The sanitary landfill, which can accommodate 1, 200 tons of garbage a day, can also accept residual wastes from neighboring Dumarao town in Capiz province.
A PHP6, 500 tipping fee will be collected per ton of wastes from the local government units.
The city government will have an 18-percent share from the revenues when the landfill becomes operational, Palmares said.PNA
