Western Visayas has the highest number deaths due to the onslaught of Typhoon Odette, initial data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) showed.

The region logged seven fatalities as of Friday, Dec. 17. They were from Negros Occidental (3), Guimaras (2), Iloilo City (1) and Iloilo province (1).

The NDRRMC said seven were still missing in Negros Occidental.

Odette (international name: Rai) affeced 5,864 families or 17,238 in Western Visayas.

The typhoon, based on PAGASA’s 11 p m. bulletin, was last spotted 105 km northwest of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan with maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 185 kph.

“While over the West Philippine sea, the typhoon is forecast to move west northwestward and may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday (Dec. 18),” the state weather bureau said.

Four deaths were recorded in Central Visayas, two in Caraga and one each in Eastern Visayas and Northern Mindanao.IMT
