Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas has expressed personal support for the 2022 presidential bid of Vice President Leni Robredo.
The chief executive’s Facebook and Twitter posts praising Robredo, one of the staunch critics of the Duterte administration, have been making the rounds online.
On Sunday, October 17, Treñas posted on Twitter several photos of Robredo during her visit to the city goverment-run molecular laboratory in Molo district.
“Para maganda ang gising nyo bukas,” the mayor wrote in the caption.
The vice president retweeted the post, saying: “Thank you very much for your support, Mayor Jerry.”
Treñas replied: “I admire your grit. You have unyielding courage in the face of adversity and have proven to be effective despite the limited resources. Above all, you have no traces of corruption.”
In a Facebook post on Monday, October 18, the mayor thanked Robredo for her support to the city government’s COVID-19 response.
“I have known Vice President Leni for a long time, and as colleagues and friends is public service,” said Treñas.
“When you understand the cry of the community, we should not wait for the click of the camera to act. As a public servant and a lawyer, I should stand firm for the welfare of my people. As the father of the city, I must also choose the right leader to guide and lead us,” he stressed.
But Treñas, who is a member of the National Unity Party (NUP), clarified that he has not yet officially endorsed any presidential candidate.
The mayor said he would wait the decision of his party on who to endorse as the next top leader of the country.IMT
