A mother and her one-year-old son died after they were struck by a pickup truck in the town of Leon, Iloilo province on Sunday, July 11.
According to the Leon police station, Emilyn Cañonero, 25, was riding a bike with her child along the road in Barangay Agboy Sur when the vehicle hit them.
“Sa amon pagngusisa, nagabisekleta ang iloy upod ang iya bata nga ara sa sulod sang basket sang bike. Galagaw-lagaw sila sa kilid dala,’” Police Staff Sergeant Jessie Cabalfin said in an interview over radio station Aksyon Radyo-Iloilo.
The mother was declared dead on arrival at Aleosan District Hospital in the town of Alimodian. She suffered fatal injuries on her head.
Her child died a few hours after being brought to the hospital.
The driver, identified as Mark Angelo Lipa, 19, of Barangay Agboy, Leon, tried to escape after the incident but crashed into the railings of a bridge that connects Barangay Talacunan and Barangay Anonang.
Lipa, who was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, and his minor companion sustained minor wounds.
Cabalfin said they are now preparing all the documents for the filing of charges against the driver for reckless imprudence resulting in double homicide and damage to property.IMT
