The southern town of Miagao in Iloilo gears up for the start of the bulb onion season, this, as 422 farmers received seeds from the High Value Crops Development Program of the Department of Agriculture (DA-6).
These local farmers as well as fisherfolk were assured of the municipality’s full support as there will be more interventions provided, according to Sangguniang Bayan Committee Chairman for Food Security Aaron Noble who spoke during the seed distribution.
For his part, Arli Nim, consultant for Municipal Economic Enterprise, said that the local government unit guarantees that the onions produced by the farmers will be linked directly to the consumers.
Moreover, trainings for value adding such as pickled onions and powdered onions will be facilitated by the lgu to maximize the potential of the commodity as processed products.
This move also ensures that there will be no wastage in the farmers’ harvests.
