The Land Transportion Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has reminded public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers that all students are entitled to a 20 percent discount all year round.
Under Republic Act 11314, students can avail of the discount not just during school days but also during weekends, holidays, and semestral breaks as long as they present their school IDs.
The law covers Filipino students in elementary, secondary, technical-vocational, or higher education institutions. It does not apply to students taking post-graduate studies such as masteral, doctoral, medicine, and law.
PUVs – including buses, jeepneys, taxis, vans, tricycles, aircraft, and marine vessels – that refuse to the discount on regular fares for students will face penalties.
A fine of P5,000 will be charged for first offense, P10,000 fine and 30-day impoundment of vehicles for second offense and P15,000 and cancellation of franchise for the third offense.IMT
