Student-athletes from Iloilo and Negros Occidental pulled off a stunner in the ongoing 2019 ASEAN School Games in Semarang, Indonesia.

The team was led by Negrense Ann Katherine Quitoy from Romanito Maravilla National High School (RMNHS), who snatched the country’s first gold medal in the girls’ javelin throw. 

Coming off from an injury, Quitoy proved supreme in the tournament and defeated other Asian competitors. 

Teammates and fellow Negrenses Bernalyn Bejoy and Trexie dela Torre also contributed medals in the event. Bejoy grabbed one silver and one bronze in the 400-meter hurdles and girls 4×400 meter relay event, respectively. She teamed up with Charmaine De Ocampo, Divina Mahusay and Riza Jane Valiente.

Dela Torre also made waves after getting silver in the girls’ long jump. 

In other ball games, the volleyball team represented by the National University Lady Bullpups finished a silver medal after bowing to Thailand in a scintillating gold medal match, 20-25, 29-31, 25-19, 25-18, 9-15. 

Talisay City-native libero Shaira Jardio, Bacolod City-native Angel Canino and Guimarasnon setter Camille Lamina bannered the team. 

It was a back-to-back gold medal finish for the country’s basketball team as they blasted Malaysia, 118-62. Former Bacolod Tay Tung High School star cager Harold Alarcon and Ilonggos Gerry Austin Abadiano and Menard Songcuya, both former St. Robert’s International Academy (SRIA) Panda Rockets also stepped up their game to claim the coveted title.IMT
