Beating all fighters in the world arena, Ilongga pride Kimberly Anne Custodio made the country proud after snatching the gold medal in the 2022 JJIF Jiu-Jitsu World Championship in Abu Dhabi, UAE on Wednesday.
Custodio, a product of Carpe Diem Philippines and MDS Jiu-Jitsu Iloilo, ruled the women’s -45 kilogram division, hammering Kacie Pechrada Tan of Thailand, 6-4, in a scintillating finals clash.
The pride of Oton, Iloilo showed the never-say-die spirit of a true-blooded Ilongga as she eliminated Sakaew Tadaporn in the semifinal, 14-0, after upsetting hometown bet Hamdah Al Shkeili, 14-0, in the quarterfinal.
“I joined jiu-jitsu because it’s a best self defense for women. You learn how to dominate someone bigger and stronger than you using only leverage and proper techniques,” she added.
The former John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (JBLFMU) sentinel said she used to work full time in a casino and gaming industry. But because of the sport, it helps develop her discipline.
“It helps so much on my physical and mental health. I still have another world tournament on November 17, a world jiu-jitsu pro competition. To all aspiring athletes, just keep working. Hard work really pays off,” Custodio disclosed.
The newly-crowned champion will visit Iloilo this December, along with coach Myron Mangubat for a jiu-jitsu training seminar.IMT Sports
