Ilongga and Olympic-bound boxer Irish Magno has initiated a fundraising activity to help victims of Typhoon Ulysses that battered Metro Manila and nearby provinces last month.
In a Facebook post, the 29-year-old pride of Janiuay, Iloilo encouraged boxing enthusiasts to support the activity titled “Boxing Class for A Cause” in her hometown where she currently trains for the Tokyo Olympics.
She said the idea came from her and Raynald Ardiente, owner of the FitStart Gym. This was the third time that Magno conducted a boxing tutorial, which was open to all ages.
Magno said it also helps her cope with her training, as she is still training online through the guidance of coach Boy Velasco. The current online setup gives her a bit of anxiety, knowing that having her coach physically guide her is more effective than online training.
“Sa ngayon po Monday to Friday every afternoon may online training po kami with other national boxers and coaches at every morning nagbibigay naman po si coach Boy Velasco ng training ko na more on endurance naman po Yun,” she added.
So far, the country has four athletes bound for the Tokyo Olympics: pole vaulter EJ Obiena, who is training in Italy; gymnast Carlos Yulo, who is in Japan; boxer Eumir Marcial in the United States; and Magno.IMT
