The province of Iloilo has the highest cases of various coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) variants in Western Visayas.
Data from the Department of Health (DOH-6) showed that 143 of the 482 COVID-19 variant cases detected in the region as of Sept. 19 are from the province.
Of the 143 cases, 119 are considered local, 14 are returning overseas Filipinos (ROFs), six are tagged to other regions, and four are for verification.
Most of the variant cases in the province are Beta (B.1.351) with 48. It was first discovered in South Africa.
The highly contagious Delta variant from India came in second with 48 cases, followed by Alpha (B.1.1.7) from the United Kingdom with 35 cases, Theta (P.3) with 12 cases, and gamma from Brazil with one case.
Antique province has the second highest number of variant cases in the region with 72, followed by Bacolod City, 64; Iloilo City, 61; Negros Occidental, 56; Aklan, 35; Guimaras, 27; and Capiz 24.
Majority or 395 variant cases in Western Visayas are local, 41 are ROFs, 26 are from other regions 20 are to be verified.
Of the total variant cases in the region, 176 are Delta, 112 are Alpha, 111 are Beta, 81 are Theta and 1 Gama.IMT
