Residents of a town in Iloilo can swap their plastic trash for rice.

The local government of Dumangas launched last week its “Basura Baylo Bugas Program.”

Mayor Onal Golez said the program aims to address the solid waste problem in their town.

A kilo of plastic waste like candy wrappers, tetra packs, and shampoo sachets is equivalent to a kilo of rice.

“Tinluan nila ini kag isulod sa plastic bottles para mabayluhan bugas nga ginbakal naton sa aton farmers diri sa banwa,” Golez explained.

The mayor said the redemption center is located at the lobby of their town hall.

The collected waste, according to Golez, will be shredded and blended into sand and cement to make concrete footpaths, among others.IMT
