The Iloilo Provincial Government will carry out commemorative activities to celebrate the 36th anniversary of the 1986 People Power revolution on Friday, Feb. 25.

The celebration of the bloodless revolution that overthrew the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos was ordered by Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. through an executive order (EO).

“This year’s celebration of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution is meant to safeguard the truth of history during the martial law years, and remember the struggle for freedom and democracy during those times,” Executive Order No. 136 stated.

“It is also meant to preserve the legacy of People Power as an ultimate assertion of the will of the people that charted the course of the country’s history and restored democratic institutions.”

Activities include a Freedom Rally, a Freedom Countdown, a People Power Noise Barrage, and a Freedom Caravan.

The Freedom Rally will be the Iloilo Provincial Capitol grounds starting with a program at 8 p.m.

Part of the program is the Freedom Countdown which will end at 9:25 p.m., the time when Marcos fled the Philippines after 20 years of rule in the country.

The countdown will be followed by the People Power Noise Barrage. “All government agencies, establishments, sectors and households are enjoined to participate in the People Power Noise Barrage, and all churches are earnestly requested to ring their church bells at 9:25 p.m.”

The People Power Caravan will follow the noise barrage. “Vehicles participating in the Freedom Rally shall disperse and hold a motorcade to different points in Iloilo province and Iloilo City.”

Minimum Public Health will be strictly implemented during the activities.

Defensor also ordered the display of the Philippine flag in the “Provincial Capitol, government offices, establishments, sectors and households” until Feb. 25.IMT
