The province of Iloilo posted a drop in the number of suicide cases.

From January 1 to February 16, 2021, the Iloilo Police Provincial Office’s Detective Management Unit (IPPO) registered six cases of suicide.

Two of the cases occurred in Pavia and one each in Alimodian, Dueñas, and Santa Barbara.

According to the IPPO, “the victims suffered from depression before they committed suicide.”

“Only one victim was a minor, another one was in early 20s, while the rest were already in their late 50s,” it said.

Last year, the IPPO recorded 19 cases of suicide in January-February period.

Police Colonel Gilbert Gorero, IPPO director, attributed the decrease their massive information drive and the easing of quarantine restrictions, among others.

“We hope that the trend continues. We were disturbed by the 92 suicide cases last year, and we need to work together not to repeat it this year,” he said.

“The suicide deaths last year are more than fatalities of COVID-19. This means that this problem also requires our serious attention,” Gorero added.IMT
