Iloilo City will host an international cycling race next month.

The GFNY Asian Championship slated on September 22 is expected to gather more than 300 cyclists from different countries.

This is the first time that the city will host an international cycling race.

Junel Ann Divinagracia of the City Tourism and Development Office said the hosting of the event would give a big boost to the city’s bid to earn the “Bike Capital of the Philippines” title.

“We really welcome this event in September, as we would also like to feature our destinations in the city.”

Councilor Jay Treñas III, Iloilo Bike Council executive director is targeting to get the title by 2024.

Every year, the city is holding a bike festival and other activities involving cyclists.

Aside from Iloilo City, the route for GFNY Asian Championship participants will also include the towns of Pavia, Santa Barbara, Cabatuan, Janiuay, Lambunao, Calinog, Dueñas, Dingle, Anilao, Barotac Nuevo, Dumangas, Zarraga, New Lucena, and Leganes as well as Passi City.

The event is organized by GFNY Iloilo. It is supported by the Iloilo City Government, Iloilo Provincial Government and Megaworld Corporation, among others.

Winners will be sent to GFNY NYC World Championship on May 17, 2020.IMT
