The head of the Iloilo City Government’s task force against public smoking has been chosen as one of the recipients of the 2019 Presidential Lingkod Bayan Award.
Iñigo D. Garingalao, Iloilo Anti-Smoking Task Force (ICAST) executive director, will receive the award next month during the Philippine Civil Service 119th Anniversary celebration.
The award is conferred to “an individual or a group of individuals for their exceptional contributions resulting from an idea or performance that had nationwide impact or public interest, security and patrimony.”
Garingalao was appointed as ICAST chief during the administration of former mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog in 2010.
The city’s anti smoking campaign earned local and international awards.
Last May, the city government received the “World No Tobacco Day Award,” along with four other awardees in the Western Pacific region.
The city governemnt also became a Red Orchid Hall of Famer from 2012 to 2014.
ICAST’s intensified anti-smoking drive resulted in the apprehension of 7,806 violators in 2018.
Last July 1, Garingalao left his post, but he was reappointed by Mayor Jerry P. Treñas.IMT
