Iloilo City posted the highest number of vehicular accidents in the whole Western Visayas region.
From January to December 15 this year, a total of 5,911 vehicular accidents occurred in Iloilo City, data from the Police Regional Office (PRO-6) showed.
The figure accounted for almost half of the 12, 560 accidents recorded in the region.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Joem Malong, PRO 6 spokesperson, said they were “alarmed” by the high cases of road mishaps.
Most of the vehicular accidents resulted in damage to property with 7,627 cases. A total of 4,090 caused physical injuries and 443 caused deaths.
“We cannot stop these unless we educate our drivers and pedestrians to follow the traffic rules and regulations,” said Malong.
“The police presence cannot guarantee that there will be no accidents because accidents are uncalled for,” she added.
Recently, the Highway Patrol Group of PRO-6 conducted seminars for police officers to be deputized and impose traffic laws and regulations.
“We already have deputation. We ensure every municipality has theirs so that we can impose the traffic laws,” she said.IMT
