Iloilo City has officially launched the celebration of its 85th Charter Day anniversary with the theme “Forging Stronger Ties in the Community.”

Mayor Jerry Treñas said this month-long celebration focuses on tax payers’ valuable contribution to the progress and development of the city.

On August 25, the city government will give recognition to top tax payers in the metropolis.

“The highlight of our celebration will be the dinner, ara dira ang pag-appreciate ta sa bulig man sang mga tax payers ta nga even in the midst of the pandemic kanami sang lakat sang aton syudad,” said Treñas.

The celebration, according to the mayor, will remain “simple” because of the lingering threat of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

“It will just be a simple event. But I think importante nga i-celebrate ta ang Charter Day event ta kay ti amo ni pagsugod sang aton nga syudad,” said Treñas.

“What is unique about Iloilo I think I always say this, it is a conglomeration of several municipalities that is why in a all our district may plaza kita. This is also the reason ginkay-o ta ang mga plaza para may kadtuan man ang mga tawo,” he further said.

Iloilo City was inaugurated on August 25, 1937 as a chartered city. This, after the surrounding towns of La Paz, Mandurriao, Molo and Arevalo were merged with the progressive town of Iloilo on July 16, 1937, by virtue of Commonwealth Act No. 158.IMT
