Iloilo City significantly improved its competitiveness ranking among highly urbanized cities (HUCs) in the country.

Based on the 2023 Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index (CMCI), Iloilo was the No. 1 most competitive HUC outside the National Capital Region (NCR).

Overall, the city climbed to the fourth spot from seventh last year. It placed second in Government Efficiency, fourth in both Innovation and Economic Dynamism, fifth in Resiliency, and ninth in Infrastructure.

Local Economic Development and Investment Promotion (LEDIP) Office head Velma Lao received Iloilo City’s awards at the Philippine Creative Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Congress last week.

Meanwhile, the town of Mina in Iloilo province ranked seventh under the fifth to sixth class category.

According to the CMCI website, local government units (LGUs) “are ranked on their competitiveness based on an overall competitiveness score.”

“The overall competitiveness score is the sum of scores on five main pillars which pool data from several sub-indicators. The five main pillars are: economic dynamism, government efficiency, infrastructure, resiliency, and innovation.”IMT
