The ban on the entry of live pigs and pork products in Iloilo City has been extended.
Mayor Jerry P. Treñas issued on Wednesday, Jan. 8, an executive order extending the ban on ” live pigs, hog carcasses, pork and pork products and by-products originating from and/or processed in Luzon until June 2020.”
The ban will also remain in effect on pork products from African swine fever (ASF)-affected countries like China, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Cambodia.
The extension aims to protect the city’s ASF-free status.
“There are still cases of ASF in the country particularly in Luzon, thus a possibility of it reaching Region VI and cause high mortality and affect the food security of the city,” said Treñas.
It was in October last year when the mayor issued an EO imposing a pork ban for a period of ninety days.
ASF “is a highly contagious viral disease that affects pigs, warthogs, and boars.”
It causes pigs to have fever, loss of appetite, hemorrhages in the skin and internal organs, and even death.IMT
