Hua Siong College of Iloilo (HSCI) Red Phoenix retained their title in the Bingawan Foundation Cup-Preseason High School Basketball Premier Tournament.
The Vincent “Bing” Conlu-mentored cagers survived the real scare from the hands of St. Robert’s International Academy (SRIA) Panda Rockets during the finals encounter, 75-68, in the town of Bingawan on July 14.
Reneil Gamboa provided the sparks for the winning team after sizzling with a double-double 27 points and 16 rebounds. The Hua Siong big man was hailed finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the game.
Jan Villariza and Dan Bagatman also stepped up their best game to carry the team to a back-to-back championship title.
To recall, both teams capitalized on their veteran players who have the Palarong Pambansa experience. Tournament MVP and SRIA’s best player Gwyn Miles Pendon paced the John Guanco-led Panda Rockets with series of outside shots and easy jumpers. However, the Pototan native failed to carry his team to victory after Hua Siong spoiled their attempt for a clutch shot in the dying seconds of the final canto.
Meanwhile, in the battle for third place, CenterPhil Montessori SilverKnights claimed the silver medal after defeating Sta. Clarita International School (SCIS) Primes, 119-106.
The Janiuay-based school was led by Lester Valn Paraico who erupted with 47 points for CenterPhil.IMT
