Guimaras chesser Fritz Bryan Porras capitalized on his national game experience as he salvaged two gold medals in the just-concluded 2nd Pintados De Passi Chess Tournament at the Passi City Arena.

The homegrown player who played for Iloilo Kisela Knights in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) impressed the crowd inside the arena, taking his first gold in open category of blitz event.

It was a total domination for IKK woodushers after Cesar Mariano and Dennis Bernas secured the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Adding another gold medal, Porras also ruled the open category of standard event with his five points. Bernas and IKK’s Mark Jossel Mariano finished runners up. The Guimaras native took home P9,000 cash prize all in all – P3,000 for the blitz and P6,000 for the standard categories.

“In three days of playing, it was not easy because almost everyone wanted to win especially in the blitz event where NM cesar Mariano, NM Francis Jocson, Mark Mariano and Dennis Bernas are also joining. So sobrang happy na sa first day pa lang sa blitz event ako ang nanalo, then sa standard category focus lang ako every game, iniisip ko nalng na every game is important especially kasali din yung team owner namin sa Iloilo Kisela Knights si Sir Leo Sotaridona, kaya sobrang happy na nakuha ko yung first place for both blitz and standard category,” Porras explained.

Mariano and Bernas won P2,000 and P1,000 in the blitz respectively; while Bernas and Mariano got P4,000 and P3,000 in the standard event, respectively.

IKK team manager Gil Libutaque, meanwhile, got a special award as Top Senior (60 above) player, while Passi City’s Dan Warren Demure was cited as Youngest participant. They both got P500. Kisela owner Leo Sotaridona got the Brilliancy Award in the Standard Open category.

Another Guimaras player ruled the 16-under. Keith Haniel Magoliman topped the Blitz and Standard events. In both categories, Kurt Kevin Ladot and Neil Matthew Lademora ended up with silver and bronze, respectively.

Chester Acuyong of Roxas City claimed two gold medals in the Blitz and Standard events of 14-Under category. He collected P5,000 for ruling the two events.

Iloilo City’s Faith Argenal, on the other hand, took home the championships in 12-Under Blitz and Standard events. The Ilongga has P5,000 total cash prize for her twin victories.IMT Sports
