Around 500 riders in Guimaras supported the “Charity Ride for the Sakayanons” which aims to help displaced boat men and crews of the recently phased-out wooden-hulled motorbancas in the island province.
Organized by the Guimaras Riders Group, the proceeds of the fundraising activity raised a total of P84,200 and will be used in purchasing goods and kits to the displaced motorbanca crews.
All five towns shared their support as they sent participants who pedaled their way from Buenavista wharf and passed through Jordan, Nueva Valencia, Sibunag and San Lorenzo.
After the event, 192 food packs were turned over to Jordan Motorbanca Association while 172 food packs were received by Buenavista chapter. Each association also received P5,000 cash each.
The phase-out of the wooden-hulled boats plying the Guimaras-Iloilo route vice versa affected the livelihood of the motorbanca operators.
Dr. Richard Gabayoyo, lead convenor of the said Charity Ride, said they were happy with the turnout of the event.
“As the lead convenor sang charity ride para sa mga sakayanons, nagapasalamat gid ako sa tanan nga volunteers ,donors, participants/riders group kag solo riders for the support and cooperation that made as one and show our concern to our fellow Guimarasnon. This event keeps the volunteerism spirit alive. This event will not be successful without the help of our core group,” he added.
The event was also in partnership with the Provincial Government of Guimaras, five municipalities, Land Transportation Office (LTO), and Philippine National Police (PNP).IMT
