GCash, the Philippines’ number one finance app, is expanding its cross-border payments in Qatar thanks to its partnership with Alipay+, a suite of global cross-border digital payment and marketing solutions.
“We have been doubling down efforts on making sure GCash is available to Filipinos across the world, in line with our vision of ‘Finance for All’. And it doesn’t come at a better time for us to launch our cross-border payments in Qatar as the country hosts the World Cup,” said Martha Sazon, president and CEO of GCash.
Filipinos in Qatar can now use GCash to pay at select merchants who support Alipay+ payments. The FIFA World Cup has kicked off in Qatar with an estimated 1.5 million visitors traveling to the small Middle Easter nation for the tournament.
Using GCash in international destinations like Qatar is just like paying in Philippine peso as it allows users to experience real-time foreign exchange without any service fee. For one, Filipino travelers in Qatar can use GCash at establishments including a wide range of hotels in Doha, Duty Free shops and high-end retail outlets such as Gucci at the Hamad International Airport.
Qatar is the latest country where Filipinos can use GCash for cashless transactions. The Philippines’ top e-wallet is already available in Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Malaysia with more than one million merchants accepting GCash as a form of payment.
“It’s just as easy to use GCash abroad as it is here in the Philippines. As long as the user has a fully-verified GCash account, they’re ready to enjoy the benefits of cashless transactions in these select destinations. Thanks to our partnership with Alipay+, our users can also access cashless transactions with no service fees,” explained Winsley Bangit, chief customer officer of GCash.
To be sure an establishment overseas accepts GCash, just look for the Alipay+ sign and GCash logos that can be found at the cashier or on signs at merchants’ doors. Once a customer is ready to pay, they just need to scan an establishment’s QR code using the GCash app, or tap “Pay abroad with Alipay+” and have the merchant scan their QR code.
