The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) inaugurated the first seismic station in the province of Iloilo April 28.
The seismic station is located at Central Azucarera de San Jose, Inc. (CASA) sugarcane plantation in Barangay Ponong Pequeño, Dueñas town.
PHIVOLCS, an attached agency of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), said the establishment of the station “further enhanced its monitoring capability.”
“This allows faster and more accurate issuance of earthquake information to decision makers, emergency responders, and the general public.”
“Furthermore, the improved determination of earthquake parameters and detectability of seismic events will be important inputs for earthquake disaster preparedness and risk reduction.”
The inauguration of the station, which is also the 115th seismic station in the country, was led by DOST Undersecretary Renato Soledum Jr.IMT
