Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas on Thursday, March 26, denied that he underwent testing for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and had a close contact with a person infected with the disease.

“Hindi Matuod nga nagpatest ako para sa COVID-19. Kag hindi man matuod nga naka ‘close contact’ ako sa isa ka tawo nga positibo sa nasambit nga virus,” Treñas said in a statement.

“Kun matuod ina, ako mismo ang mapahibalo sa inyo tanan. Prangka man ako kag wala gid nagabinutig sa inyo tanan,” he added.

Treñas issued the statement to refute a post made by a Facebook user.

Labeled as “fake news” by the city government, the post stated: “As I was listening to the radio…Ilonggos! Let’s pray for Mayor Jerry Trenas as he is undergoing a test for he had a close contact with a person who is positive with COVID-19 (sic).”

The post, which appeared on Wednesday, March 25, on Facebook was already taken down.

Trenas told the public to remain “vigilant” and “beware of fake information.”

“Madamu nga salamat sa mga naghatag pagkabalaka sa akon, pero hindi na kamo magkabalaka bangud sa liwat, hindi ina matuod,” he said.IMT
