The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH-6) will close again the entire Ungka Flyover once displacements or movements in the structure are detected from its reopening.
Engineer Sanny Boy Oropel, DPWH-6 OIC regional director, said they will continue to monitor the four-lane flyover, which straddles Iloilo City and the neighboring town of Pavia.
Based on the results of the geotechnical investigation conducted by Abinales Associates Engineers + Consultant, the third-party consulting firm hired by DPWH-6, all 16 piers of the flyover sank with depths ranging from 17 millimeters (mm) to 151 mm.
On Friday, Sept. 22, DPWH-6 reopened the P680-million flyover to light vehicles to help ease heavy traffic, especially during rush hours, in the area.
Oropel assured commuters and motorists that the structure is “safe” for use.
“We can say that there was no vertical movement so to speak, and what we observe and still the same on what we observed since January 2023,” he said.IMT
