The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH-6) has recommended the reopening of the defective Ungka II Flyover to light vehicles during the celebration of this year’s Dinagyang Festival.
Engineer Nerie Bueno, DPWH-6 regional director, said it’s up to the department’s central office and the Bureau of Design (BOD) to decide about their recomnendation.
“We cannot do anything if they will not approve it. Syempre po pag-aaralan din nila kasi baka ‘yung magiging effect is maging serious naman if we are going to use it,” she said during a meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 10.
“And later on, because of the seriousness baka hindi na po magkaroon ng technical intervention na pwede natin gawin sa flyover. We would like to make sure lang po na maging safe it para sa atin,” Bueno further said.
The 680-million flyover, which straddles Iloilo City and the town of Pavia, was temporarily closed in September last year after it was found to be suffering from vertical displacement.
In the meantime, Bueno said they are “working overtime” to speed up the construction of the two-lane road on both sides of the flyover.
The two-lane road, according to the regional director, will help ease traffic in the area.IMT
