Student-athletes from Central Philippine University (CPU) proved supreme in the 2019 Iloilo Private Schools Athletic Association (ILOPRISAA) after ruling various events at the University of San Agustin (USA), Nov. 22.
The Golden Lions made an emphatic performance in the men’s tertiary tennis at the expense of the host team. In the first singles, CPU outmuscled San Agustin, 8-5, thanks to CPU’s John Dreve Jimenea. In the doubles clash, the Augustinians bounced back and survived CPU paddlers. USA’s Don Balsicas and Onirel Estoque eliminated JJ Gazo and Lorenzo Legaspi.
Bot teams traded baseline rallies in the first set, with CPU leading the game, 2-0, but Estoque and Balsicas answered the run before CPU equalized at 6-all. In the final encounter, San Agustin showed solid executions to outplay the Golden Lions, 8-6.
Matthew Flores rallied from being down 1-6 to win the game, 8-6. Flores gained some momentum and got the overall champion.
Meanwhile, Golden Lions made a fiercer attitude to snatch the title in the secondary volleyball girls and boys.
It was CPU’s 14th consecutive secondary girls volleyball reign after a 25-11, 25-16, 25-23 sweep of USA.
The CPU girls were comprised of Clarisse Cordero, Isobel Alcantara, Railyn Alcarte, Antea Aposaga, Fiona Arroyo, Henia Celiz, Jane Dela Cruz, Meg Hondrade, Arianne Kew, Gabrielle Sasuman, Yvonny Pajarito, Josline Salazar, Trixie Sampiano, and Rossy Sumalacay.
It was a double celebration for CPU as they nabbed their seventh straight title in the secondary boys event after a 25-13, 27-25, 25-21 victory over Hua Siong College of Iloilo Red Phoenix.
The CPU team included Paul Azote, Lawrence Borra, Vince Codico, Jhon San Jose, Kurt San Jose, Paul Parreño, Miles Atienza, Jose Bantolo, Xjhan Camaymayan, Venz Canuto, John Dedoroy, Dan Janolino, and John Noble.IMT
