The Central Philippine University (CPU) Golden Lions played like an well-oiled machine as they survived Western Institute of Technology (WIT), 75-73, during their scintillating championship encounter of the 82nd Charter Day Basketball Tournament at the Jaro gym, Aug. 24, 2019.
It was nail-biting clash between two powerhouse teams as they made series of high-percentage shots despite a strong defense of each other.
Trading shots at the paint, the two teams employed a man-to-man defense to secure baskets for scoring opportunities. CPU gave WIT hard-earned shots at the paint but the latter successfully completed the baskets through catch-and-shoot tactics.
The winning squadron looked to pull away as they cruised to their biggest lead at 8 points in the dying minutes of the last frame. But WIT found easy looks to fight back and converted much-needed baskets to narrow the gap.
With a sense of urgency, WIT changed their game plan and applied sticky defense to CPU big men but the Golden Lions were unstoppable as they shot a clutch layup with 15 seconds left in the game to capture the coveted trophy.IMT
