Western Visayas logged an average of 257 cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) per day from April 1 to 19, 2021.

The number was three times higher compared to 84 infections per day in March.

Dr. Mary Jane Juanico, DOH-6 spokesperson, said they expect the number of COVID-19 cases in the region to continue to rise at faster rate until the end of this week.

The region, based on the April 19 bulletin issued by the DOH-6, has recorded a total of 32,348 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, of which 27,239 have recovered and 840 have died.

Negros Occidental accounted for almost half or 2,073 of the 4,263 active cases or patients who are still infected with the coronavirus in the region.

Bacolod City occupied the second spot with 665 active cases, followed by Antique with 501; Iloilo province, 427; Iloilo City, 265; Aklan, 169; Capiz, 151; and Guimaras, 12.

According to Juanico Negros Occidental is considered a high-risk area for COVID-19 infection, while Antique, Capiz, Iloilo City, and Bacolod City are considered moderate-risk areas.

No new variants of COVID-19 have so far been detected in Western Visayas.

Jaunico said the two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from the region who tested positive for the UK variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, were allowed to return home after they recovered from the disease.IMT
