Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas has expressed support for the proposal to extend the term of barangay officials to five years.
“Agree ako nga ubrahon na sila five years para indi na tama ka frequent ang elections. Kon five years na matulutawhay na,” Treñas said in a press conference on Monday, August 8.
Last June, Executive Secretary Vic Rodriguez said the administration of President Bongbong Marcos is looking at the possibility of amending the term of village officials.
Under the current law, the term of barangay officials is only up to three years.
Meanwhile, Treñas also said that he is in favor of suspending the December 2022 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).
“Subong palang damo na di gakadto sa akon nga mapadalagan. Mayu siguro mapahuway ta anay sa pulitika,” the mayor told reporters.
The BSKE should have been held in May 2020, but in December 2019, former president Rodrigo Duterte signed a measure postponing the elections to December 5 this year.IMT
