The Iloilo City Government is now looking for ways to make coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) tests offered by its newly opened molecular laboratory affordable.
The operation of the Uswag Iloilo City Molecular Laboratory in Barangay San Pedro, Molo district started on Monday, Nov. 16.
City Mayor Jerry Treñas and Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor, Jr. led the inauguration of the facility on Saturday, Nov. 14. The event was also graced by Department of Health (DOH-6) Director Dr. Marlyn Convocar and Office of Civil Defense (OCD-6) Director Jose Roberto Nuñez, among others.
“This is another milestone for us. I am grateful for everyone who extended their efforts to accomplish this project. I am also thankful for the strong relationship of the city and the province by working hand in hand to combat the challenges brought by the pandemic,” said Treñas.
The laboratory is expected to speed up the release of RT-PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) test results.
“COVID-19 testing has been a challenge for Iloilo City since we only have limited testing centers, and having quick results means containing the virus and isolating those who have been infected by the virus will be much easier,’” Treñas said.
According to the mayor, the laboratory has the capacity to process up to 400 specimens per day. The results may come out within two days.
“Eventually, we could be able to test more specimens to effectively fight this pandemic,” he said.
As of Nov. 14, the City Health Office recorded 4,204 confirmed cases of Covid-19, of which 3,903 have recovered and 108 have died.IMT
