Nearly one million tourists visited Boracay Island, the country’s crown jewel, in the first five months of 2023.

The resort island in Malay, Aklan recorded 944, 850 tourist arrivals from January to May this, data from the town’s tourism office showed.

Of the figure, 735,645 were domestic tourists; 185,039 were foreign tourists; and 24,166 were overseas Filipino workers (OFWs)/overseas Filipinos.

According to Malay Tourism Officer Felix Gregorio Delos Santos, most of the foreign visitors were from South Korea, USA, China and Australia.

The local government unit (LGU) of Malay is aiming to atrract 1.8 to 2 million tourists on Boracay Island this year.

Delos Santos said they are optimistic that their 2023 tourist arrivals target will be achieved.

Aklan, through the Kalibo International Airport and Caticlan Airport, caters to direct flights from South Korea, China and Taipei.

Delos Santos said more international flights are expected to resume at the airports.IMT
