The number of active coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in Western Visayas is approaching the 9,000-mark.

The Department of Health (DOH-6) recorded 764 new cases in the region on Sunday, June 6, the highest single-day jump in cases.

The new infections brought the region’s total active case count to 8,941.

Negros Occidental has the most number of active cases with 2,068, followed by Iloilo City (1,982), Iloilo province (1,704), Bacolod City (1,473), Capiz (681), Aklan (497), Antique (427), and Guimaras (109).

According to the DOH-6, 61.51 percent of the active cases in the region are asymptomatic or have not manifested any symptom of COVID-19, 33.79 percent are mild, 2.26 percent are moderate, 2.38 percent are severe, and 0.07 percent are critical.

From March last year to June 6, 2021, the region logged 50,948 confirmed cases of COVID-19, of which 40,786 have recovered and 1,205 have died.IMT
