The Iloilo City Government has created a task force to address the possible effects of the looming El Niño, a weather phenomenon that could lead to a dry spell.
The creation of the Iloilo City El Niño Task Force was ordered by Mayor Jerry Treñas through an exeutive order (EO).
According to state weather bureau PAGASA, El Niño “may emerge in the coming season (June-July-August) at 80% probability and may persist until the first quarter of 2024.”
The weather phenomenon “is expected to impact the various sectors such as agriculture, water resources, marine resources, human health, and evironment, among others.”
The task force will be headed by Treñas. Its primary function is to “formulate a comprehensive disaster preparedness, response plan and contingency plan for the El Niño phenomenon.
The task force members shall constitute its members into working committees, each focused on different functional concerns such as the following:
▪ Agriculture, Natural Resources and water management
▪ Early warning system and information campaign
▪ Energy and power, public works, transportation and telecommunication
▪ Consumer protection, social services, health and rescue and relief
